Music

Everyone Feels Musical

At St Catherine’s College, our Music curriculum is built on the belief that Everyone Feels Musical. We aim to inspire every student to discover and nurture their musical talents, fostering confidence and creativity through dynamic and engaging lessons. Music plays a vital role in our school community, with every student encouraged to participate in music-making and explore their potential to the fullest.

“Music is a world within itself, it’s a language we all understand” Stevie Wonder

At St Catherine’s, we believe music is a universal language that enriches students' lives and helps them develop as well-rounded individuals.

Through the study of a wide range of musical styles and genres, our curriculum:

  • Promotes inclusivity, ensuring that all students, regardless of ability, feel empowered to express themselves musically.
  • Builds confidence and self-esteem through exciting performance and composition projects.
  • Enhances personal expression, reflection, and emotional development, helping students connect with their emotions and relate to others.
  • Encourages cultural understanding, providing insights into music as an integral part of human history, identity, and connection.

Beyond the classroom, our vibrant Music Department offers:

  • A range of extracurricular opportunities, including school ensembles, rock and pop bands, vocal groups, and numerous exciting concerts and projects.
  • Regular performances and events, creating a lively and inspiring environment that celebrates student achievement.
  • Instrumental lessons in partnership with Create Music, enabling students to learn in groups or individually and explore a wide variety of instruments.

Through music, students gain skills that extend beyond the subject itself:

  • Critical thinking and creativity, as they compose and perform original works.
  • Collaboration and teamwork, through group performances and ensemble work.
  • Cultural awareness, as they explore the historical and contemporary significance of music across the globe.

Music is an integral part of daily life at St Catherine’s College, fostering personal growth and building connections between home, school, and the wider world. By engaging with music, our students develop their competence as learners, their confidence as individuals, and their understanding of the world around them.

Students can learn in a group with three or four other players, so that they benefit from learning with others and making music together, or individual lessons. Lessons are held weekly for 30 weeks over the school year. Create Music also offers music groups and short courses at their centres across Sussex.
