At St Catherine’s College, Geography plays a crucial role in helping students understand our ever-changing world. Our Geography curriculum is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and perspective needed to address the complex environmental and social challenges of our time. Rooted in our mission to prepare students to stand shoulder to shoulder with their peers locally, nationally, and globally, we inspire students to become informed, responsible, and proactive citizens. Through the study of Geography, students:

  • Explore Human Geography, understanding the dynamics of cultures, societies, and economies, and how these interact with global systems.
  • Investigate Physical Geography, gaining insight into the forces shaping landscapes, climates, and ecosystems.
  • Connect these social and physical processes to specific places, fostering an appreciation of the interconnections between cultures, political systems, economies, and environments.
  • Develop the ability to analyse differences and inequalities between places and social groups, examining their causes and impacts.

Our curriculum progresses through:

  • Years 7 and 8, where students study country units to explore the vast diversity of cultures, political systems, and natural environments across the globe.
  • Year 9 and GCSE, where students delve deeper into contemporary human and physical geographical issues, including topics like inequality, sustainability, and globalisation.

By embedding these concepts, we ensure students are equipped with the knowledge to tackle pressing global issues and the skills to understand the intricate connections between people and the planet.

Geography is, in the broadest sense, an education for life and for living. It nurtures students to become:

  • Socially and environmentally aware, with a deep understanding of the challenges facing humanity and the natural world.
  • Informed global citizens, capable of making responsible and ethical decisions.
  • Critical thinkers, able to analyse complex systems and propose thoughtful solutions to contemporary problems.

Our curriculum also encourages students to appreciate the relevance of Geography to their futures, developing skills valued by employers and educators, such as problem-solving, teamwork, data analysis, and effective communication.

The Geography curriculum at St Catherine’s College inspires students to explore the world with curiosity and responsibility, empowering them to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
